The containment is now in place. You need to limit your movements and if possible work at home. At Frandroid and Numerama we already do telework regularly, let alone during this time of the corona virus. Here are our basic requirements to work efficiently from home.

The PC: the central part of teleworking

Your PC will of course be the essential part for teleworking. If your company provides a laptop, this will fix the problem. If not, investing in a good machine is essential. Working with a malfunctioning PC not only wastes your time, but also makes your homework uncomfortable.

If you are looking for a machine, we have written several guides for all budgets:

In this last category you will obviously find the most efficient machines. Everything depends on your needs. We mainly recommend the Dell XPS 13, which is the most versatile laptop choice to date.

For fixed PCs, Numerama offers configuration instructions for gamer PCs. Since slot machines are primarily performance-oriented, they are also perfect for teleworking, and we also offer excellent accessories.

Keyboard and mouse: Find the right accessories

Louise Audry for Frandroid

It is also important to invest in high quality accessories. We think especially of keyboards and mice. In general, if the basic equipment is sufficient most of the time, it is better to invest in high-quality equipment in the long run. For office automation, we offer a guide to the best mice. We prefer Logitech’s MX Master 3. The ergonomics are perfect and the side wheel allows you to scroll through Excel spreadsheets at lightning speed.

With keyboards, you can choose between an office keyboard and a membrane that produces less noise when you are not working very far from your other half. We’re still thinking of Logitech with Logitech’s Mx Keys, which are offered for a hundred euros. Otherwise, an ergonomic keyboard is also a good solution, we like the Microsoft keyboard, then count around 65 euros. You finally have the Logitech MK740 package with its little mouse. The latter, however, should be viewed more as a troubleshooting device.

If you’re using a more mechanical keyboard, you prefer the tactile and click buttons, which are generally better for typing. All of our suggestions can be found in our guide to the best mechanical keyboards to play with.

The screen: see well to avoid eyestrain

If you are working on a laptop at home, especially if it has a 13-inch screen, investing in an external screen is important for two reasons: first, it gives you more comfort when juggling between different windows and then does not tire your eyes .

Depending on how much space you have at home, a 24-inch screen with Full HD definition is the easiest option. From the office’s perspective, you don’t have to worry about the response time or the accuracy of the colors. The most important thing is to have more space. This Samsung Full HD screen is relatively discreet, costs only a hundred euros and should be enough. With this 27-inch screen from Dell for just under 200 euros, you can switch to a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440.

Otherwise, you can finally choose a 4K monitor. Maxime de Numerama, who works from home most of the year, recommends the ultra-thin LG 4K 24-inch for Mac users as it is connected via Thunderbolt and has USB C ports. If it’s only 24 inches, that’s The 4K definition leaves a lot of work space. However, it is not specified, count around 750 euros.

For the Windows PC world, the Samsung LU32J590UQUXEN monitor with a diagonal of 32 inches and a 4K definition should also be fully satisfied. It is offered for a little more than 300 euros.

The seat: Protect your back with a good fit

Occupational medicine is very clear on this topic. Sitting well is extremely important to protect your back. The basic rule is as follows: Stand straight, arms at right angles, the screen at eye level and both feet flat on the floor. If companies generally offer their employees high-quality seating, this is less often the case at home. Clément D., developer at Humanoid and in daily telework, bought the Epic model from Noblechairs for around 350 euros.

It is certainly an expensive model, but can be adjusted very precisely and is particularly comfortable. If the investment is high, you will not regret it and it will take time. This cheaper and more discreet Mfavour armchair with height-adjustable armrests and lumbar support is also a suitable choice and costs half.

Printer: Even if you do telework, you may need paper

If all offices are equipped with a printer, this becomes increasingly rare among individuals. Even with telework, documents may need to be printed. Various invoices, archives, need for original paper documents, etc. We have written a special shopping guide with some inexpensive printers, which is sufficient for occasional use and is quickly available in this specific period.

Note that we recommend the HP Laser107a, which is available from Cdiscount for less than 100 euros. She currently uses a reimbursement offer of 40 euros, which makes her fall below 60 euros. Pretty nice. Given the current high demand for printers Prices can change the stated was valid at the time of writing this article.

Cut yourself off from the world with a good helmet

If you want to cut yourself off from the world, headphones are a very good option. We have a complete guide to the best headphones with suggestions at all prices. In the upper price segment we recommend the Bose Headphones 700, currently the best headphones: comfortable, with excellent noise reduction and excellent sound.

Bose 700 headphones

In the entry-level area, we like the Sennheiser HD 350 BT very well, it does not have noise reduction, but the passive insulation is of good quality and the comfort is there. If you work alone and don’t want to wear headphones all day long, you can also find our speaker tips for the PC.

Internet connection

A good internet connection is essential for working from home. If it can be difficult to change your ISP at a time when the internet is so important, you may be able to take the opportunity to switch to a more upscale offering at better speeds. Find our summary of current fiber and ADSL deals or use our internet subscription comparator below.

We also remind you that in these times of network overuse it is better to use your fixed connection than 4G if possible.

Need a mobile plan

In contrast to the Internet, switching from one mobile operator to another usually takes place without interrupting the service. Do not hesitate to consult the best mobile phone plans currently available thanks to our comparator.

In addition to the hardware, some proven methods for teleworking

So much for our selection of devices, but teleworking also requires a certain amount of life discipline, without having to go to the office, it is quickly tempting to let go. Here are some recommendations that, based on experience, allow you to telework more effectively.

  • Get up at normal times and get dressed as if you were going to the office.

This is important to realize that we work at home, not just at home.

  • If possible, set up a small corner office, as small as it is

This also helps you to determine a work and leisure space.

  • Communicate with your colleagues and use the appropriate tools depending on the type of problem

With IT tools, we can easily communicate with colleagues. Instant messaging is useful for sharing information. Calls are easier to exchange ideas and find compromises. Emails allow you to track a complex project.

  • When you are done with the work, you are done with the work

As soon as your day is over, leave your office corner and “go home”. At home we can tend to no longer separate personal time from professional time. If it can work for a while, it is important in the long run to separate the two.

So much for our advice, do not hesitate to send us your comments.
